IBM will buy medical data company for $2.6 billion

According to foreign media reports on the 19th, International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) will acquire data company Truven Health Analytics Inc. for $2.6 billion, a move aimed at further expanding IBM's established health care business.

The deal will double the number of employees in IBM's Watson Health business unit to 10,000 employees, as the company's new technology services to doctors and hospitals will increase.

IBM has been investing heavily in the health care industry last year, providing more than $4 billion to acquire medical technology companies.

Truven, based in Ann Arbor, Mich., provides medical data services to hospitals and pharmaceutical manufacturers to help them determine the effectiveness of their products and services.

The deal is expected to be completed in a few months, the largest acquisition by IBM Chief Executive Virginia Rometty since he took office in 2012. As IBM's core business continues to decline, Luo Ruilan tried to change the fate of the 104-year-old company through new investments in data analysis, security and mobile computing.
