Ophthalmic medical equipment import replacement will speed up

On the 17th, the 16th International Conference on Ophthalmology was held in Shanghai. The conference comprehensively demonstrated new technologies for ophthalmology diagnosis and treatment, including equipment and clinical ophthalmology, which played an important role in the development of ophthalmic medical equipment technology. In addition, with the popularity of electronic products, aging, and myopia in adolescents, the prevalence of related eye diseases is on the rise, prompting the demand for ophthalmic medical services to increase year by year. At present, there are about 300 million people suffering from visual impairment in China, of which 45 million are blind, and there are more visually impaired patients, accounting for 68%. The continuous expansion of market demand will drive the rapid development of ophthalmic medical devices.

The global medical device market is expanding year by year, and the proportion of ophthalmic devices is expected to grow rapidly. According to the statistics of the European Medical Device Committee, the total sales of the global medical device market has rapidly increased from US$290 billion in 2006 to US$599.1 billion in 2014, with a compound annual growth rate of 8.82%. At present, the United States, Japan and other countries account for more than 80% of the global medical device market. Among them, the United States is the world's largest producer and consumer of medical devices, accounting for about 40% of the global market. In addition, ophthalmic devices account for a relatively high proportion of global medical devices. In 2013, global ophthalmic medical device sales revenue reached 24.5 billion US dollars.

China's medical equipment started late, and the pace of import substitution is accelerating. The development of medical device products in China lags behind the pharmaceutical industry, and the market products are mainly imported. In 2014, the sales volume of medical devices in China was about 255.6 billion yuan, accounting for only 14% of the total income of medical and medical devices, far below the global average of 42%, and the per capita medical device costs were much lower than most countries. According to BMIEspicom's forecast, the domestic medical device market will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 15% in the future, which will be much higher than the growth rate of developed countries.

In recent years, the state has launched a special support plan for medical devices to encourage innovation in medical device companies in China. The Ministry of Science and Technology, the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and other departments will focus on the medical device technology industry and give priority support to projects that conform to the direction of national industrial development. As the policy continues to encourage import substitution, the ophthalmic medical device market will have more room for development in the future.
