The Chinese Industrial Biotechnology White Paper 2015 issued by the Chinese Academy of Sciences recently pointed out that China’s number of invention patents ranks first in the world, and half of the world’s total open industrial biotechnology invention patents are protected in China.
According to the white paper, in 2012-2014, there were 28,154 patents for industrial biotechnology inventions in the world, and half of them (14,862) were protected in China. According to the distribution of patent family members, Chinese patents accounted for the highest share of all patent families, reaching 31%, which is twice the number of US patents ranked second.
Although industrial biotechnology has a world-leading number of invention patents in China, the number of patents filed by Chinese patent holders abroad is very small.
The white paper disclosed that in 2012-2014, Chinese patentees applied for 112 industrial biotechnology invention patents abroad, accounting for only 0.8% of the total number of industrial biotechnology invention patent applications filed by Chinese patent holders during this period.
China's research in the field of industrial biotechnology is also in the leading position in the world.
According to the white paper, in 2012-2014, the number of journals of specialized scholars in the field of industrial biotechnology was 19,797, and China published 5,114 articles, ranking first in the world in terms of publications. The second-ranked US issued a total of 4019 articles. The total number of documents issued by China and the United States accounted for 46.1% of the global papers, and the quantitative advantage is more obvious.
According to the white paper, after several years of development, China has formed a core research force for industrial biotechnology with certain international competitiveness.
