Recently, the researchers discovered three genetic mutations associated with back pain, and millions of people around the world are suffering from back pain. Mutations in the three genes, SOX5, CCDC26/GSDMC and DCC, are thought to be responsible for the development of the spine. This conclusion was reached by a team-wide meta-analysis of researchers from the US Department of Veterans Affairs on more than 150,000 European-age individuals.
These three mutations are even associated with diseases that cause pain such as sciatica and arthritis, with SOX5 being most relevant. In the past, studies have found that SOX5 mutations are associated with osteoarthritis and bone defects in the knee, hip, claw and cartilage of mice. The research team led by Dr. Pradeep Suri analyzed the effects of these three genetic mutations in 280,000 people, 50,000 of whom suffered from back pain, further confirming the association between SOX5 and back discomfort. The study has recently been published on PLOS Genetics.
In addition, CCDC26/GSDMC is also considered to play a role in lumbar disc herniation and sciatica. Sciatica originates in the lower back and passes through the buttocks to the sciatic nerve in the leg.
In another study, the researchers found that DCC is more common in depression than back pain. Therefore, they believe that there is a correlation between mental health disorders and spinal discomfort. DCC is also known to play a role in animal spinal pain.
Dr. Suri said: "The results of this genome-wide association study suggest that there may be multiple ways to influence the risk of chronic back pain. Chronic back pain is associated with mood changes, and the central nervous system is converted from acute back pain to chronic back pain. The role has been recognized.
