Wearable brain scanners can directly measure baby brain activity

Release date: 2018-03-27

An article published online by Nature in the UK recently described a wearable head scanner that incorporates a quantum sensor that records brain activity as the body moves. The prototype of the device has been introduced to measure the brain activity of infants and some special patients for the first time in history, and to help scientists evaluate brain function in the past without being able to check.

Traditional studies of brain activity typically use magnetoencephalography (MEG) or functional magnetic resonance imaging, but they all have limitations because their subjects can only be obese adults— The data depends on the patient having to remain stationary in the bulky brain scanner.

This time, the University of Nottingham scientist Matthew Brooks and colleagues developed a new MEG system that combines quantum sensors and a new technology to eliminate the surrounding magnetic field. The final product is a very lightweight helmet that records MEG data in millisecond resolution. To prove that the device is effective, the researchers recorded the next measurement of the subject's natural behavior (such as nodding, stretching, drinking, and playing games). They have a reliable data record that is comparable to the data obtained by today's most advanced scanners.

The potential applications of this system are very broad. With this device, scientists can now test brain functions in many new environments, such as social situations or walking in an external environment. For the first time in history, researchers are able to directly measure brain activity in infants, young children, and special patients, including people with sports disabilities. The system will provide new insights into the diagnosis and control of people with mental illness and assist researchers in assessing brain function in patients with developmental disorders and degenerative diseases.

Beeswax

Beeswax is obtained from the honeycombs of bees after the Honey has been removed by draining or centrifuging. The combs are melted with hot water, steam or solar heat; the melted product is filtered and cast into cakes of yellow beeswax. With detoxification, wound healing, tissue regeneration, pain relieving effect. Commonly used in the ulcer not healing, ecthyma erosion, ulceration of trauma, burn and scald.
